Two thirds of German holiday charts are Christmas songs with “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (Mariah Carey) and “Last Christmas” (Wham!) occupying the joint top spot for the fifth time. This year two thirds of the Top 100 currently consists of Christmas songs compared to 51 holiday songs in the official German singles charts in 2019 as determined by GfK Entertainment. The only German-language Christmas titles are “In der Weihnachtenäckerei” (Rolf Zuckowski and his friends, 40) and “Merry Christmas everywhere” (Helene Fischer, 94).
The first non-Christmas track, “Jerusalema” by Master KG feat. Burna Boy & Nomcebo Zikode, appears at position 18. The highest newcomers come from Ed Sheeran (“Afterglow”, 35) and the father-daughter team Nat ‘King’ Cole and Natalie Cole (“The Christmas Song”, 50).
Christmas is also the predominant theme in the album charts and is responsible for around a fifth of entries which include Christmas productions such as Michael Bublé’s “Christmas” (four), Helene Fischer’s “Christmas” (seven) and Robbie Williams “The Christmas Present” (twelve).
In the duel of the singers, Helene Fischer (“The Helene Fischer Show – My Most Beautiful Moments (Vol. 1)”) passes Mia Julia (“Mitten in Mia”), who takes second place. The Belgian electronic project Dive (“Where Do We Go from Here?”, 30) and US rapper Playboi Carti (“Whole Lotta Red”, 45) reached the top 50.
The official German charts are compiled by GfK Entertainment every week on behalf of BVMI, the German music industry association.
