In what is a world first, SuperStereo Radio Chile will be making its instrumental channel available in HiRes quadraphonic sound. Starting on the 13th October, SuperStereo 6 will be available in ‘QS’ quadraphonic sound in high resolution which can be played by anyone with a 5.1 sound card or who listens on a home cinema system.
Erik Jegó, CEO SuperStereo Network said, “We have digitized a large number of vinyls from great orchestras such as Ray Conniff, Bert Kaempfert, Franck Pourcel, among others and more. At the SuperStereo network we know the responsibility it means to be one of the leaders in high resolution broadcasting, which is why we bring the best advances so that the select group of listeners who listen to us every day enjoy the highest possible sound quality.”
SuperStereo take the QS encoded originals and process them through a Dolby ProLogic encoder to produce 5.1 files. As this is a complex mastering process, the material will be gradually added to their audio library.
QS was one of a number of quadraphonic systems which were promoted in the 1970s and which failed to achieve commercial acceptance. Multiple competing formats and a lack of product at the time contributed to ‘Quadraphonic sound’ failing to take off despite favourable reviews by experts and consumers alike.
