Streaming was up 23% in the Netherlands for 2019 contributing to the strongest growth in the Dutch music industry in five years according to NVPI, the Dutch music industry association. With a total turnover of more than €206.8 million in 2019, the Dutch music industry saw an increase of 13.2% – the strongest revenue growth in five years. In 2015, half of the revenue came from streaming, which has now grown to almost 80% making up the lion’s share of industry revenues.
These positive results are partly due to top releases by national and international artists. Both the Album and Single Top 100 throughout 2019 are led by Dutch talent. The Francis van Frenna album came in at number 1 in 2018 and recaptured this place in 2019, after winning an Edison, and then stayed there for a long time. In the Single Top 100 the song Hij Is Van Mij by Kris Kross Amsterdam came first followed by Maan & Tabitha feat. Bizzey’s list. ‘Marco Borsato, Armin van Buuren & Davina Michelle’, Snelle, Boef, Lil ‘Kleine, Dopebwoy, Davina Michelle and Duncan Laurence can all be found at the top of the 2019 charts, as well as the international artists Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Ed Sheeran, ‘Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello’, Post Malone, Lewis Capaldi and Tones and I.
The successful streaming market amounted to €161.7 million in the past year, up 23% on the previous year. The sale of physical products decreased from 45.5 million in 2018 to 40.6 million in 2019 and thus fell 10.7%. Sales of vinyl have risen sharply in recent years, but this year show a slight decrease of 1.3%.
