Streaming during 2020 was up 31.8% in Italy reaching a record 1Bn streams per week during the last weeks of 2020 according to FIMI, the Italian music industry association. According to data compiled by GfK data for the association, premium streaming dominated the market this year with a growth of 31.8%, while free streaming was up 9%.
The lockdown and the related closure of many stores has slowed down the sales of physical media which after months of decline (up to 70% of sales) closes with 27.8% down compared to last year.
FIMI said, “In such a complex 2020, without major events and with a temporary suspension of publications, the industry has been able to work to find new connections with fans and to continue to support new talents, demonstrating how important music is for our country. even when a pandemic revolutionizes their lives.”
The top album of the year was recorded by a local Italian talent – Persona by Marracash stands first in the Album & Compilation chart, followed by Famoso by Sfera Ebbasta and then by tha Supreme’s 23 6451. For the first time in many years, the top ten is comprised entirely of Italian music, which crosses generations ranging from classic pop to trap, but which features 4 albums released in 2019 showing the impact of the different lockdowns of these months.
The Singles chart is more international, with Karaoke by Boomdabash & Alessandra Amoroso at first place and Rocco Hunt & Ana Mena with A un passo dalla luna in second place.
Pink Floyd’s timeless classic, The dark side of the moon, remains first in the Vinyl chart, the most eclectic of the charts between past titles and new releases. In second place there is Famoso di Sfera Ebbasta, while AC / DC ‘s Power up completes the top 3 podium places.
