Sonos now supports Amazon Music in HiRes streaming at a maximum stream rate of 24-bit/48kHz joining Qobuz which was first HiRes streaming service on the platform. The Sonos products capable of playing 24-bit music at 48 kHz are Roam, Arc, Beam (both generations), Five, Sub (all generations), Move, One, One SL, Port, Amp, SYMFONISK Bookshelf, SYMFONISK Table Lamp, Play:5 (Gen 2), Connect (Gen 2), and Connect:Amp (Gen 2). Amazon Music Unlimited has two qualities HD (CD Quality) and Ultra HD (HiRes up to 24-bit/192kHz) but Sonos streams are limited to 24-bit at 48kHz.
Dolby Atmos is supported on Arc and Beam and both HiRes and Dolby Atmos playback require the installation of S2 software on your Sonos devices. Prior to this update, you could listen to Dolby Atmos music on these products via an external media streaming device such as Apple TV 4K or similar.
On the S2 app there is a a badge on the Now Playing screen that clearly indicates when you’re listening to HiRes audio from Amazon Music. The legends are:
- HD – indicating a CD Quality 16-bit/44kHz stream
- Ultra HD – indicating a 24-bit HiRes stream
- Dolby Atmos – indicating a track encoded in Dolby Atmos
Sonos has said that other HiRes services will be added to their platform but no indication of which ones and timescales.
