Safaricom’s has relaunched its Songa streaming service with data free packages and a reduced tariff of 5 Kenya Shillings per day. Safaricom is Kenya’s largest mobile operator with 29.5 million users (2018) but Songa has not attracted the numbers of subscribers its owners expected since its launch in February 2018.
As part of its relaunch Songa is reducing its basic service to 5 Kenya Shillings per day and making it data free for Safaricom subscribers.
Users of the package will be able to stream or download more than 2 million tracks including local, African and selected international content on the platform.
Songa also said it had committed to a new direction aimed at empowering Kenyan artists, with the bulk of marketing efforts now focusing on promoting and uplifting local musical works.
Kenya recently surpassed the 40 million mobile subscriptions in 2017 and currently stands at 41 million with mobile penetration at 90.4% of the adult population making it Africa’s most internet enabled country (Jumia Report 2018).
Safaricom controls 67% of mobile subscriptions in Kenya (Bloomberg), which gives Songa an advantage to achieve greater market share. But despite high internet penetration and the second-fastest internet speed in Africa, costs remain a significant factor in the uptake of the service as 42% of people in Kenya live below the poverty line. Telecom operators are increasingly partnering with music streaming services offering free subscription periods or data free tariffs.
Subscription pricing for Songa service is as follows:
- Gold Package Daily – Ksh 5 (local, African and selected international)
- Premium Package Daily – Ksh 25 (local, African and all international)
