History
Napster started out life as a peer to peer file trading service which was shut down for copyright violations. After bankruptcy and several owners it was bought by Rhapsody another streaming and download service in 2011. Rhapsody amalgamated the two services and rebranded as Napster. In August 2020 MelodyVR acquired Rhapsody and the Napster business and in February 2021 changed its name to Napster.
The Napster streaming business has two divisions – consumer and business – which offer very different services.
The consumer service, branded Personal, offers 320kbps AAC streaming with a respectable 60+ million track catalogue. It has all the standard features such as mobile and desktop apps but when compared with mainstream streamers it does not offer podcasts, lossless streaming or some of the more innovative discovery features.
The business arm provides professional streaming services for mobile phone operators such as Telefónica Germany, radio streaming services for Uforia Music and Sonos Radio, integrations to In Car Entertainment systems and music services to retailers such as Aldi and Rakuten. These are branded ‘Powered by Napster’. Other services have included a HiRes streaming service in Japan in conjunction with Sony Music called mora qualitas which launched in October 2019 but this will be shutting down in Spring 2022.
It would seem that Napster has the capability to be competitive but the current offering now represents poor value for money when compared to the market leading streamers such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. There have been announcements that funding has been raised to relaunch the service but it will have to go some to compete with Apple Music and Spotify.
