Music streaming in Germany is up 20% in 2021 with 165 Bn streams – almost a fifth more than 2020 (138 Bn), over half more than 2019 (108 Bn) and twice as many as 2018, when 80 Bn hits were reported. These are figures released yesterday by the BVMI from data compiled by GfK Entertainment. Since the start of collecting stream data in 2013, the number of all streaming views now adds up to a total of 623 Bn.
Dr. Florian Presses, BVMI CEO: “Music streaming is available practically anytime, anywhere, and music is a daily companion for more and more fans, from smartphones to smart homes and cars. You can generate your very own soundtrack from an immense repertoire universe and put it together again and again to suit every activity and mood. More and more people are being fascinated by these possibilities, so it is as logical as it is gratifying that the number of songs streamed has increased by almost 20% in the past year.”
Dr. Mathias Giloth, Managing Director of GfK Entertainment: “Streaming is by far the market segment with the highest turnover. The past few weeks have impressively demonstrated the major role it plays in daily music consumption: Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve set new daily records with 716 million and 674 million clicks, respectively. And in the category “Most streamed titles within 24 hours” there are now “Last Christmas” (Wham!, 5.0 million streams), “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (Mariah Carey, 4.8 million streams) and “Driving Home For Christmas “(Chris Rea, 4.5 million streams) at the front, which were heard up and down on Christmas Eve 2021.”
The stream data is based on advertising supported and chargeable music-audio streams with a duration of 31 seconds or more. Amazon Prime Music has been integrated since week 49 in 2020. Stream data from YouTube Music is expected to start in the first quarter of 2022 and then also retrospectively for 2021.
