Germany had 236 Bn streams in 2024 according to figures by the BVMI from data compiled by GfK Entertainment. This was 11% more than 2023 when 213 Bn streams were achieved. Within the last 6 years the number has more than doubled – in 2019 there were 108 Bn views.

Current songs are particularly popular with music fans with songs from the 2020s increasing their streaming share from 52 to 56% from last year. German-speaking acts such as Ayliva, Luciano and Nina Chuba are particularly popular. They represent eight of the ten most streamed artists of this decade. Music from the 2010s accounts for 26% of all streams, while the 2000s remain unchanged at 8%. The decades before that account for 10% in total. By releasing new music, artists such as Linkin Park and Taylor Swift have increased interest in their older titles. In addition, classics such as Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst)” and “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey experienced a revival of interest.

One of the streaming genres with the highest growth rates is German-language pop. This grew by 15% compared to the previous year. Even stronger growth was seen in country (+58%) and folk (+26%) – driven by acts such as Beyoncé, Dasha, Shaboozey and Hozier. The children’s radio plays and children’s music segment also saw a significant increase, improving by 19%.

Dr. Florian Drücke, Chairman of the Board of BVMI said, “The attractiveness of music streaming in Germany continues to grow significantly, which is impressively underlined by the number of hits. The fact that German-speaking musicians are becoming increasingly successful in the streaming sector is also a promising development.”

Dr. Mathias Giloth, Managing Director of GfK Entertainment added, “There is currently only one direction in music streaming: always upwards. The growth in the German pop sector is particularly pleasing, as it is extremely diverse thanks to exciting collaborations with hip hop or dance acts, for example. The playlists were particularly popular on Christmas Eve: thanks to 927 million hits, it was the most streamed day of all time, with almost 100 million more streams than in the previous year.”
