German music charts to include advertising financed streams in addition to physical sales, downloads, premium music streams and radio plays according to the BVMI. The first single charts according to the new regulations cover the sales period 30th December 2021 to 6th January 2022 and will appear this Friday (7th January 2022). Another new feature for 2022 is that YouTube will now also contribute data to determine the single charts and this will apply to both free and premium streams.
Dr. Florian Presses, BVMI CEO said, “Music is heard through all available media and on all channels, and offers that are financed by advertising and are therefore free for fans also play a role. The aim of the Official German Charts is the most comprehensive possible representation of music usage in all its diversity, because the charts are the success barometer for fans as well as for the industry itself. The integration of all possible ways of using, including free streams, is a logical step in this respect. Also, that YouTube is now among the chart reporters! ”
Dr. Mathias Giloth, Managing Director of GfK Entertainment who compile the Official German Charts on behalf of the BVMI, said, “The Official German Charts cover a broad spectrum from physical products to streaming, downloading and airplay – and with a coverage of over 90 percent, they are the central guide for consumers, industry and the media. We are now pleased to be able to include an indispensable part of the daily music experience for millions of people with the integration of YouTube data and overall advertising-financed streams. This makes the charts even more versatile and comprehensive. ”
The Official German Charts are sales-based and are based not only on the number of sales and streams, but also on the price of a product and the value of a stream. The average value of a free stream is determined in consultation between the BVMI and its member companies and is regularly checked.
