Austrian music market up 15.5% in first half of 2023 with fans spending €98.3 million on streaming subscriptions, CDs, downloads and vinyl records according to IFPI Austria. Revenue from music streamers Spotify, Apple, Amazon, YouTube and Co. increased by 20% to almost €82 million and thus dominates the Austrian music market with an 83% market share. There were 8.6 Bn songs streamed in the first half of the year – an 18% increase compared to last year.

Advertising-financed audio offerings (+ 37%) and paid music video subscriptions (+ 28%) are growing at a disproportionately high rate, albeit with comparatively low sales. It appears that improved legal protection as a result of the EU Copyright Directive seems to be having an effect in the advertising-financed market segment. With this intensively discussed directive, the EU made it clear that the large online platforms bear copyright responsibility and must acquire licenses for protected content.

Vinyl is catching up on what CDs are losing

Strong demand for vinyl records continues in the first half of 2023. Sales increased by 17% to €5.4 million, which represents a market share of 5.5%. Sales of €8.4 million music CDs were down 10% but overall, the physical music market in Austria is stable, with only a small drop of 1%. The decline in CDs is almost completely compensated for by the increasing sales of vinyl records.

At the top of the album charts in the first half of 2023 is “72 Seasons”, the eleventh studio album by US metal legends Metallica. Followed by Taylor Swift with “Midnights” and the Austrian rapper Raf Camora, who created a musical monument to the 15th district of Vienna, Fünfhaus, in his album “XV”. Together with Bonez MC, he also occupies 8th place with the album “Palmen aus Plastik 3”. The New Year’s Concert 2023 of the Vienna Philharmonic with Franz Welser-Möst with eleventh place just barely missed the top 10 of the best-selling albums in the first half of the year.
