In 2017 the Australian record industry grew by 10.5% fuelled by a 56% increase in advertising supported and subscription streaming services, according to ARIA, the Australian Recording Industry Association.
The increase in value to A$391 million was the largest increase the industry has experienced in its annual wholesale figures since 1996.
2017 was the first year that revenue from music streaming services (at A$213 million) accounted for over half (54%) of the overall market. The streaming category includes revenues from subscription services such as Apple Music, Deezer, Google Play and Spotify and other non subscription streaming services such as YouTube and Vevo. Five years ago the revenue from streaming in Australia was negligible.
Physical formats account for 25% of the overall market and vinyl album sales increased for the seventh consecutive year increasing by 19%. Digital formats of all kinds account for 75% of all Australian music sales.
The growth of streaming in Australia mirrors the growth of streaming in other countries and continues to fuel the growth in worldwide recorded music sales.
