Apple Music has previewed an embeddable music player which brings the prospect of listeners being able to play songs, albums and playlists in a browser instead of using iTunes.
While the player does not offer full access to the Apple Music catalogue, it is the first time that subscribers can listen to their music from a computer without needing to install iTunes. The player features a pause and play button, a progress bar, and skip controls. Previously, the widget was limited to streaming 30 second clips of tracks and albums. Apple Music subscribers can use the Sign In button and will have access to full tracks and albums without leaving the web page.
The web player uses an updated version of its MusicKit developer software which is allowing developers to incorporate Apple Music into other applications. A recent example is the Bandsintown live concert app which allows Apple Music subscribers to discover more artists by seamlessly listening to an artist’s catalogue and simultaneously browsing live events without having to switch between apps (Bandsintown integrates Apple Music for seamless discovery experience)
Here is an example of the web player below which includes a Sign In link.
Spotify, Qobuz, Deezer, Tidal and most other competing music services have offered subscribers this option for years, allowing subscribers to access playlists and their favourite albums from a web browser instead of having to install software.
