German music sales continued to grow in 2023 with revenue reaching €2.21 Bn – up 6.3% on 2022 according to the BVMI in recently released figures. The majority of sales, 81.5%, were generated from the digital business, which grew by 7.9%, driven by audio streaming (+8.4%), which now has a market share of 74.8%. The physical market (18.5%) remained stable (+0.1%) due to renewed significant vinyl growth of 12.6%. CD sales fell by 5.9% but still remains the second strongest market segment (11.3%).
Music genre shares in 2023
Pop music tops the list at 24.3% followed by Hip-Hop at 19.9%, Rock at 17.3% and Dance music at 11.6%. Classical and Jazz remain fairly niche with 1.7% and 1.5% shares respectively.
