Sonos have launched the beta of a new platform integration with If This Then That (IFTTT) using their new open API – the Sonos Sound Platform which will connect your Sonos sound system to other home devices.
IFTTT has integrated hundreds of different smart home products, websites and content providers and with this beta launch, users can trigger their favourite songs and sounds on Sonos from millions of different IFTTT events.
Sonos can start your favourite radio station when your Ring-enabled door unlocks after you get home, or set your lights and your music using Phillips Hue. Actions available from your Sonos devices include basic playback control, pause/resume/next/previous, and volume controls (up, down, mute and unmute). You can also start playing a pre-defined Sonos Favourite or song, album and artist playlist.
IFTTT allows you to customise your smart home with Sonos by creating Applets or recipes to send commands to Sonos using the ‘then that’ section of your command, also known as the ‘action’.

IFTTT
If This Then That, also known as IFTTT is a free web-based service to create chains of simple conditional statements called Applets which can be triggered by other web services or Internet of Things (IOT) devices. It is starting to be used in home automation, for instance switching on a light when detecting motion in a room or turning off the sound in a speaker when you leave the house.

Sonos Sound Platform
The Sonos Sound Platform makes available a set of APIs which enables the building of new sound experiences using the Sonos range of speaker products. The initial September launch releases a set of controls that allow developers to observe and control Sonos players. Scheduled for release in October are:
- Notifications/Audio Clips – Play short, discrete sounds and notifications on a player without fully interrupting the music. The song or audio will lower in volume and resume following the notification.
- Sonos Playlists – The ability to list and start playback of Sonos Playlists within a third-party interface.
- Max Volume and Volume Pass-through – Partner integrations will be able to set the maximum volume of Sonos players, as well as subscribe to volume events for fixed-volume players. This will allow, for example, an A/V receiver to have its volume controlled via the Sonos app when connected to a Sonos Connect.
